This one off Warren Platner base was plucked from the garage of a former Knoll employee. It was probably a second or prototype. I have not found any catalog clues from my limited personal library. Since it was not in the best of shape or maybe it was never properly finished in the first place, I had it freshly sandblasted and powder coated in gloss white. I planned on pairing it with a 60” dining top but then I discovered that the height of it was not quite right to make a dining table. It’s too low. I had to hunt for another top to do it justice. So flash forward to remembering my grandma had a marble coffee table. My mom had to have it. I checked and she did! It was in the shed. So we dug it out, I convinced her my late Grandma would want me to have it to save my table and we loaded it in the car. The marble is beautiful. It has some age flaws, after all, it was used a long time! I remember it when I was a kid. Anyway, it just sat on a plywood piece that had skinny brass legs on it so nothing special and I will repurpose the legs at some point. Have a look at my reimagined Platner. Authentic Knoll because it came directly from the plant, but it is not a standard size of anything I could find. Enjoy it for it’s unique sexy self and mcm purists need not apply!
23” tall, 36” diameter
Notable: This piece came from a Knoll employees collection. It was rusty and never appeared to have been chromed….it had paint or primer on it which looked factory. That said, I am pointing out the base should be have been chromed in the factory but in this case, it was not. Employees get ahold of prototypes, mistakes, returns, damaged goods at the plant. This family has a whole property filled with them. I did my best to work this piece to a condition I would be proud to use in my home. This is definitely an early base.
This one of a kind beauty will make a great side table, place in between a pair of club chairs and so much more. Display your choice collectibles or flower arrangement in an entry or nook. If you need a taller coffee table for an overstuffed modern sofa, this may be a good choice!
