This table is a classic William and Mary style Sutherland Table. The period was named after the marriage of the English Queen Mary Stuart and the Dutch Prince William. With the merging of these two countries, a new style was born that took after both parties. The William and Mary style was graceful and decorative with walnut being the most popular wood choice. Furniture was made to be lighter and thinner.
This table has been completely carved out of walnut. Walnut is a highly sought-after wood due to its durability. The octagonal tabletop is composed of a center with two drop leaves that allow the table to be moved and stored.
The Sutherland table is said to have been designed in 1822 for the Duchess of Sutherland (1806–1861). She was known for her various philanthropic undertakings including the protest against American slavery and support of the Italian patriot Garibaldi. Sutherland tables have two drop leaves that nearly reach the floor. These tables were versatile, and dainty looking and would allow a host to hold a full tea service or play games. Emphasizing comfort and versatility, Sutherland tables can accommodate any sitting arrangement. These characteristics made these tables popular.
The middle section of the table has four turned legs attached to a stretcher that remain stationary when opened or closed. The other two legs are turned gate legs on casters that pivot and glide when open or closed. Overall, it is a beautiful and elegant table that is perfect for any home. Due to the low height, it can be used in a child’s playroom or even hold liquor bottles at a party. Its ability to move, allows it to be placed and stored anywhere in the house.
