Sculpted in France in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, our subject has long, straight hair emerging from underneath a hooded article of clothing, possibly a cardinal cloak, which was popular in Europe from the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries. A wreath of oak leaves, complete with acorns, can be seen on top of the woman’s head. Similarly, there is an olive leaf sprig tucked inside her garment, visible on the right side of her torso. On the woman’s left shoulder, there is a signature of Choppin, indicating it was made by Paul-Francois Choppin (1856-1937). He exhibited and medaled at several French expositions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A wonderful piece of artwork, the bust can be displayed on a column or pedestal or placed on a center table. See less
