This awesome antique advertising match box holder / ashtray dates from the early 1900's and is the perfect addition to any match strike or barware collection. Fabricated of vitreous china in a category commonly known as restaurant ware. It features the widely recognized red raven and catchphrase "ask the man" promoting an aperient water purported to dull the headache and soothe the tummies of those who overimbibed the night before. Manufacturing of the liquid started in the 1890s and continued until the early 1930s when the FDA began regulating such products, forbidding companies from making unjustified health benefit claims. Our research suggests that the backstamp of "Warwick China" of Wheeling, WV dates this piece to 1912 - 1920, making it at least 100 years old.
Excellent antique condition with no chips, no cracks, no crazing; minor glaze fabrication flaws (a few underglaze specks) and minor loss of gilt decoration around upper edge.
Free local pickup; otherwise shipped via economical UPS ground.
