This hand-knotted wool antique Turkish Oushak hallway runner is known as a sampler or wagireh Oushak sampler runner. This is from the Late 19th Century, circa 1880's. The antique wagireh rugs are rare and a minor masterpiece of Turkish weaving. Sampler rugs were made as a collection of all the pattern elements one would need to design and weave a carpet. In this particular antique sampler rug, the geometric pattern is animated with a rich pastel color palette. It features a center medallion extending rectilinear acanthus leaves flanked by latch-hook medallions on either side. It is enclosed with a meander border and subsidiary guard bands. Rendered in variegated shades and rich, muted hues of rose, pink, saffron, gold, amber, brick red, sand, beige, almond, light greige. Desirable Age Wear. Abrash. Hand-knotted wool. Made in Turkey.
