The Ancient Thebaid (L'Ancienne Thébaïde) depicts the desert regions of Egypt associated with the early Christian hermits and Desert Fathers. The map was prepared by the celebrated French cartographer Nicolas de Fer (1647–1720), with engraving attributed to Nicolas Guérard.

The New Thebaid (La Nouvelle Thébaïde) represents the Abbey of Notre-Dame de La Trappe in Normandy, France, an important centre of Cistercian monastic reform. The map was drawn from a survey by Monsieur de La Salle and is associated with the work of Nicolas de Fer and Charles Inselin.

Together, these two historical engravings offer a fascinating connection between early Christian monastic traditions in Egypt and their later development in France.
