Chinese landscape scroll, freely drawn colored inks on heavy paper, mounted on a gold, gray and black silk brocade in … Read more Chinese landscape scroll, freely drawn colored inks on heavy paper, mounted on a gold, gray and black silk brocade in a dragon and fenghuang medallions lattice pattern, signed, with a poem and numerous red and black seal marks in various sizes and shapes. With a glossy bronze silk makio and kakio at the top and mahogany jikusaki at the bottom. The outer scroll covering matches the silk brocade mounting. The image size is 25 1/4" wide x 50" high. Circa early 20th century, no later than mid century.

In the foreground left is the lower mountain hermitage nestled in a grove of maples and pines surrounded by massive forested promontories that also form the bouldered, reedy river banks dotted with shrubs and grasses in the right foreground. The river continues within gentler shores that lead to the rolling hills beyond. The upper mountain hermitage at the left midground is also surrounded by a forest and rounded blocky tors with trees, shrubs and grasses, as the peaks beyond, dotted with sparse habitat, soar into the heavens and fade to distance in traditional Chinese aerial perspective.
