This is a rare, finely carved, depiction of a bare-breasted Kuan Yin seated in a pose of fearlessness on a rocky throne amid ocean waves and lotus pods, her left hand in Karana mudra holding the vessel of the Water of Life and her right hand also in Karana mudra. She is clothed in flowing robes with the urna on her forehead, wearing a necklace, the crown of Amitabha, and a coiffure of ornaments with the ushnisha and long coiled braids. Her left foot rests on a lotus pod, a pair of immortality peaches are on a rocky outcrop on her left side, and her assistant, Red Boy, sits on a rocky outcrop on her right side, holding an immortal peach.

(Sudhana is the Buddhist name of Red Boy, an antagonist in the 16th century Chinese classical novel "Journey to the West". As an exchange for punishment after irreverently usurping Kuan Yin's lotus seat, Red Boy surrendered to Kuan Yin and became her attendant).

Exquisite fine realistic detail through out. The rocky throne is fashioned in the style of Chinese scholar's stones. The finely carved traditional Chinese hongmu Kang table is included. De Hua and He Chaozong marks are impressed onto the middle of the upper back. Circa early 20th century, no later than mid century.
