Vintage Japanese red and green silk brocade Imperial woven silk circular design depicting tigers and phoenixes throw pillow. Framed with Ecru color silk and accentuated with contrasting brown color silk sash and embellished with decorative small twisted silk trim in shades of orange, blue, purple and red. Framed with golden silk trim all around and golden silk backing.
On the front of the pillow the white tiger and the red phoenix, which constitute the motif of this design, represent two of the four deities in the Chinese tradition, the former reigning over the western and the latter of the Southern quarter of the universe. There are some characteristics in the nature of the floral scrolls and in other details of the textile design that are similar to those found in the wall paintings of the Kondo in the Horyuji Monastery and also to those found in the applied arts of this period. The intervening spaces between the circular designs are filled with running deer and galloping horses facing each other.
