This Genre painting features a street scene with a group gathered around the town letter writer, with the main character having to reveal intimate information while many others gather round to catch word of the gossip. The painting is signed in the lower right J.B. Burgess 1882 for English artist John Bagnold Burgess(1830-1897), it also has paper label on the back with provenance and old label from Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery in London.

Condition: Very professional repair to a tear with inpainting, the remnants of the repair can be seen by looking at the girl in pinks eye/face and following the slight line from there.
