Painted in the early 1960's, probably one of his most provocative and important works! Jesus on the Cross is a common theme in LGBT Christian Art. Artists use the crucifixion to express the horrors inflicted on queer people, to advocate justice and perhaps to offer the hope of a new life! Every group envisions Christ based on their own context and Lear was no different. Striking to note that this was probably painted before the Stonewall Riots, and an important political statement for the time. Lear was a very active painter throughout his long life but his most compelling paintings are those that combine a dreamy surreal feel with a subject matter like the one for this painting. Painting size is actually 20 x 30 but the Original mat has an opening 18 x 25. Painting is in very nice shape with a fade line on left side under mat. overall clean with no foxing or stains. Signed Lear, bottom right inside a rock. See less
