DESCRIPTION
An elegant late 19th-century French bombé commode, circa 1890, featuring beautifully figured Amboyna veneer, an original shaped marble top, and elaborate gilt-bronze mounts.
The commode displays the graceful, curvilinear form associated with the Louis XV Revival style, with a dramatically shaped bombé case, serpentine front and sides, and cabriole legs terminating in gilt-bronze sabots.
The richly figured Amboyna provides exceptional movement and depth throughout the cabinet. Ornate gilt-bronze mounts accentuate the drawer, cabinet doors, apron, legs and architectural curves of the piece, creating a striking contrast against the warm tones of the wood.
The shaped marble top follows the contours of the cabinet and is original to the piece. A wide upper drawer provides storage above a pair of cabinet doors, combining practical storage with the highly decorative cabinetmaking characteristic of fine French furniture of this period.
A substantial and beautifully proportioned statement piece with wonderful presence, equally suited to an entry hall, living room, dining room or bedroom.
