moreI highly treasure this wood carving because of its unusual design composition. This was most likely taken from a taller door panel, and this would have been on the upper section at eye level so the interesting composition of vases in archaic designs is most visible. The Chinese treasured their history and traditions, and the use of archaic vases is a way to honor their historical past. Most window panels were done in simple geometric designs but this is really a piece of art carved out in wood. The artist wanted to imbue nature into his work so he carved sprays of flowers and on the left, please notice a collection of water caltrops - each one resembling a bat and stacked together. The background lattice patterns give the appearance of three dimensionality, with the flowers carved above the background. This can be considered as what we call a still life painting of antique objects carved on wood. It is a rare piece despite its age and condition.
While researching this panel, I have consulted two Chinese language books on the art of the wood carved window panels. There is rarely a definitive answer though I surmise this is not from Shanxi, nor Anhui, so it might possibly be Zhejiang or Jiangsu. The last two provinces named were homes to the most of the Chinese literati, and such a theme could only have come from the home of a wealthy man of letters. As for the age, a mid 19 century would be the latest. After the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Daoguang (reigned 1920 to 1850,) China fell into political unrest, foreign attacks, concessions to Britain and other European powers, and natural disasters. One can assume the building of fine houses would be limited, so such beautiful carved panels would have been made prior to this period. less
