ORIGINAL DONALD ALLEN MOSHER (1945-2014) 'ROCKPORT LIGHTHOUSE' GOUACHE PAINTING
This is just a great original piece. This is one of 2 original Donald Allen Mosher paintings I purchased from a local estate. These are 2 of the artist's earlier works as around 1988 he shifted to oils. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is really a wonderful impressionist view of what I believe is Straitsmouth Light on Straitsmouth Island off Rockport. Gouache on paper measuring 10 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches. Signed lower left corner. Painting is in excellent as painted condition. Really clean and vibrant with the wonderful strong colors with no evidence of fading. Really just an excellent composition and in outstanding clean condition. Painting is in its original double matte and frame. Frame measures 18 x 12 inches. If you like the artist's work, check my store for the other work of his I am offering.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from an exhibition of his work in the 1960s reads: "Donald Mosher grew up on the North Shore, and is a descendant of shipbuilders from Nova Scotia and farmers from Maine; his interest in painting began after winning his first award at the age of eight. He later attended the Vesper School of Art*, where he met his wife Christine, and graduated in 1968. Mosher started his professional career and began teaching and demonstrating for students. For nearly 20 years his main concentration was watercolors, in 1988 he began working in oil and now has an equally impressive reputation for this medium. He is naturally drawn to the power of the sea and the tranquility of the New England countryside. This is evident in his paintings, with loose yet precise brushstrokes, revealing a sense of calm to the viewer.
He opened his first gallery on Cape Ann in 1974 and from there making is home in Rockport home since 1980. Now the recipient of over 200 awards for his work he has also been featured in several national publications including Yankee and American Artist Magazine. His paintings hang in the permanent collections of large corporations, institutions, banks, and private homes throughout the United States and abroad including the Peabody Museum, Portland Art museum, and the State House in Boston. For four years, Mosher served as the vice president of the Rockport Art Association* and as well as the curator. He is a member of many organizations, including the Guild of Boston Artists*, New England Watercolor Society, the Copley Society*, International Society of Marine Painters, and the Salmagundi Club*. His most recent publication, The Seasons of New England, features over 100 colored images of his paintings. He is currently living and working Rockport Massachusetts."
