Tapestry cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven. Painted in oil on canvas, these pieces are the pattern for everything from cushions to wall hangings. The earliest center for weaving tapestries can be traced back to 1457 in the French town of Aubusson, now associated all over the world for its tapestries.
This particular cartoon looks to have been for the back of a settee, whose outline you can see in the lighter background. A floral motif surrounded by scrollwork is oh so French and a beautiful piece of art with a rich history! Framed in a gilt frame, that showcases this wonderful piece.
