Dietz Edzard was born in Bremen in 1893. He traveled extensively through Germany, Holland and France. As painter Dietz Edzard was remarkably successful. Dietz Edzard's style began to change as of 1925. From that time on his style followed the traditions of Post-impressionism: He executed tender female figures, dancers, portraits, social scenes and odalisques in a light palette and a soft and pastose stroke of the brush onto the canvas. Works by Dietz Edzard must be se en in direct succession of Edgar Degas and continue this heritage into the new century. Collectors, especially Americans, were particularly fond of works by Dietz Edzard.
Despite his traditional style Dietz Edzard was still oppressed by the NS regime. Five of his works were defamed as "degenerate art" and were destroyed.
Works by Dietz Edzard can not only be found in German museums, but also in international ones like the National Museum in Cardiff (Wales) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Dietz Edzard died in Paris in 1963. In 1929, Edzard's work was included in an exhibition of Contemporary Painting at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, a museum dedicated to the Impressionist masters.
We think the canvas was cut down to fit into the frame and the signature was cut off .
