What can we say- this miniature caricature was probably done by the artist as a gift for a friend. It came to use for the estate of someone whose family had lived in Manhattan during the artists time there. A femme-fatale in a Fortunty style Delphos dress holds a coral colored scarf to her nose. The dress is elaborately painted perhaps possibly reflecting a beaded gown.
Executed on a black graphite paper hand painted margins of metallic gold. It is signed 'DURKEE' in the lower left. It is framed in a burnished silver gilt and gessoed shadowbox frame. Is it a scene from a cocktail party with older Madison Ave patrons or a satire of an acquaintance? A unique piece which belongs in favored space where it can be enjoyed at close range and from a person who made two distinct contributions in their lifetime.
Listed American artist born Stephen Durkee (1938-2020) also known as (Abdullah) Nooruddeen Durkee, after his conversion to Islam. Born in Warwick, NY, Durkee moved to New York City in the mid 1950s to study art and painting. He was a self-taught artist whose work draws on American life in the mid-century. His downtown studio, formerly used by Robert Rauschenberg, was near contemporaries Robert Indiana and Red Grooms. In the 1960s his work turned to abstractions. Unlike most of his Pop art contemporaries, Durkee used a dull color palette. His work was featured in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) unprecedented exhibition, The Art of Assemblage, in 1961. He and his contemporaries were considered part of an International Avant-Garde, the Americans involved in creating a distinctively American modern art. In the late 60s and 70s Durkee was part of an experiential art group, USCO, which created sound and light performances mimicking hallucinogenic experiences. In a 1962 ARTnews article, by critic Gene Swenson included Durkee along with Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Robert Indiana, James Rosenquist and Roy Lichtenstein as frontrunners in the American art scene. In the early 1970s, he coordinated the International Work Camps in the Alps conducted by Pir Vilayat Khan, later editing his book 'Towards the One'. A friend of Baba Ram Dass, Durkee converted to Sufi Islam. He subsequently founded several Islamic foundations and served as Inman to a number of congregations.
His work is included in the permanent collections of:
The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC
The Museum of Modern Art, NY, NY
