This remarkable pair of early 19th century French bronze doré statues depicts two musical cherubs modeled with lively expressions and animated movement. One cherub plays a horn, while his companion raises a baton above the sheet music resting across his lap. Their expressive faces, curling hair, draped garments and carefully sculpted hands demonstrate the quality and character of French bronze artistry.
Each figure is seated upon an elaborate sculptural pedestal richly cast with acanthus leaves, deep scrollwork, shell inspired ornamentation and powerful lion paw feet. The substantial bases give the cherubs an important architectural presence, while the warm gilded patina enhances the depth and definition of the casting.
The statues were originally created as the decorative fronts of a pair of andirons. The fireplace fittings are no longer present, allowing the figures to be appreciated today as freestanding works of bronze art. Their companion design makes them particularly desirable for display on a mantel, bookcase, buffet or console, either positioned together or placed at opposite ends of a larger composition. With their musical subject, intricate casting and expressive character, these statues offer an exceptional decorative presence for today’s interiors.
