One of the works in which we feel that Degas is obsessed with the idea of making the drawing as perfect as is physically possible, and his endeavor to achieve the wholly lifelike has an almost fanatical insistence. All his compositions of this order (and they are many) are the outcome of an inner conflict, whose climax in each ccase was the fateful moment when he knew he had to stop, after having added the final touch and realized to the best of his ability the vision he had glimpsed. A supremely poignant moment, for we feel that Degas’ unquiet spirit never allowed him the satisfaction of knowing he had achieved his purpose. See less
