An excellent First Edition French Impressionist vintage full color print of oil painting "Head of a Young Woman" by Edgar Degas. Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1940-1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 1. Excellent condition - never framed.

It is curious how the artist’s rankling dissatisfaction with himself and with his art has, so to speak, seeped into this portrait. In the young face, with its strangely tense expression, Degas has exteriorized, as it were, his own despairs. Yet he has done this with a difference; the effect on us of this so expressive face (which has been likened to a Vermeer) is one of a gently disillusioned resignation; indeed, if we gaze at it intently, we grow aware that it is smiling.
