These unique Swedish Folk Art primitive chairs can be used with or without the gorgeous handmade superb Bargello needlepoint cushions. With or without the cushions, the solid oak handcrafted chairs make a definite statement as they are very cleverly designed, extremely sturdy, and unique in construction. The backrest has two tongues (tenons) that slide into mortises in the seat which are locked in place by wooden pegs. (The backrests can be removed for shipping or storage.) Here is the provenance: One chair came with a circa 1860 Vermont farmhouse purchased in 1950. The second chair was handmade to match the original in 1956 by a European-trained skilled craftsman. The cushions were then designed and worked by hand to precisely fit each individual chair. (The cushions have chair-corresponding markings.) The cushions are held in place by sturdy coordinating hand made cords. The needlepoint work is superb and the condition of cushions immaculate.

The original pre-1860 chair is in original finish, which is a slightly lighter shade than the reproduction duplicate. Patina varies in intensity with natural aging and gives a slightly "worn" appearance. Additional things to note that are appropriate with age: The wood of the "original" is slightly checked in a few areas; the seat board planks have a small (1/16") separation; the backrest has slight movement in the mortise. It is a very sturdy, attractive, presentable and charming pair of antique chairs. The original weighs approximately 15 lbs. The reproduction chair weighs 16 lbs. and has no flaws. Both chairs have a similar satin finish appearance. less
