With or without the cushions, the solid oak handcrafted chairs make a definite statement as they are very cleverly designed, extremely sturdy, and unique in construction. The backrest has two tongues (tenons) that slide into mortises in the seat which are locked in place by wooden pegs. (The backrests can be removed for shipping or storage.) Here is the provenance: One chair came with a circa 1860 Vermont farmhouse purchased in 1950. The second chair was handmade to match the original in 1956 by a European-trained skilled craftsman. The cushions were then designed and worked by hand to precisely fit each individual chair. (The cushions have chair-corresponding markings.) The cushions are held in place by sturdy coordinating hand made cords. The needlepoint work is superb and the condition of cushions immaculate.
