Antique embroidered mirror work Rabari textile from Gujarat, India, circa 1920s.
The Rabari or Rewari are an indigenous tribal people in Northwestern India, primarily Gujarat & Rajasthan. The word “Rabari” translates to “outsiders”, and Rabari people are thought to have migrated from Iran via Baluchistan & Afghanistan. Rabari textiles are traditionally vibrant and highly embroidered, with embroidery comprising of chain stitch, back stitch and herringbone with liberal use of mirrors.
