Wayne Thiebaud ( 1920 - 2021 ) is an American painter widely known for his luscious handling of paint, and brilliant colorful palette of works depicting commonplace objects that combined sensuousness, nostalgia and a hint of melancholy. Thiebaud is associated with The Pop Art Movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture. Although his early works, executed during the 1950's and 1960's, slightly predate the works fo classic Pop Artists. He uses heavy pigment and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, and the well defined shadows characteristic of advertisements are almost always included in his work. Art works by Thiebaud are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
The landmark volume is published on the occasion of the artist's eightieth birthday to accompany a major retrospective exhibition. This book brings together 120 of Thiebaud's most important works. Essays by Steven A. Nash associate director and chief curator of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and Adam Gopnik author and art & life contributor for The New Yorker, trace the course of his career from the 1950's, when he first began to emerge as a significant national artist. They assess Thiebaud's role in the history of American Modernism and his place in the tradition of Realism.
