Wedgwood black basalt sphinxes. Each sphinx crouches on a rectangular pedestal with its forepaws extended at the front and its tail curled over its hind quarters. Each wears a semi-circular headdress, fish scale breast plate and a saddle blanket which falls down onto the base. The Grecian sphinxes are related to a design of 1763 by Robert Adam for Osterley Park. They also are similar to four lead sphinxes designed by Adam for Syon House. Both impressed "Wedgwood". Measure 11 1/2" x 5-1/4". Good condition - old repair to neck of one figure. Slate bases not included. See less
