inlay in sorrento: craftsmanship between history and modernity
it is said that the art of wood inlay was imported to the sorrento coast by the benedictine monks, between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, who were then resident in the monastery of sant’agrippino, the same monastery of which sant’antonino, patron saint of sorrento, was abbot, in 618 ad.
here the monks created carvings and wood inlays using typical local woods, such as lemon, orange and walnut.
the different shades offered by the different types of wood therefore guaranteed decorations with various colors.
the inlays, representing elements of nature, perspective views, allegorical figures and saints, enriched objects such as fake niches, illusory windows and false wardrobes.
once upon a time, becoming an inlayer in sorrento was one of the most sought-after professions and being admitted as a student in the workshop was a source of pride.
this very refined art was so much appreciated by artists and writers who stayed in sorrento (during the grand tour) that it pushed francis i of bourbon to commission furnishings and furnishings for the royal palace.
the 19th century, in fact, was the golden age for this art that reached its maximum splendor, writing, in fact, the history (and economy) of sorrento.
just think that in 1886 the school applied to the inlay and carving industry was founded.
