Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860): He was born in Paris and had the opportunity to attend Étienne Bouhot's school. He also gained a lot of experience making copies of famous paintings at the Louvre Museum, especially the works of Rembrandt, Poussin, and Murillo. Decamps made his debut as a genre painter: Arabs in front of a house (1823), Hunters in the swamp (1827), I Janissaires (1827), showing a predilection for nature and oriental subjects. To perfect himself he traveled. Due to his exotic taste, his paintings were often equated with those of Delacroix and he was nevertheless considered one of the founders of the new Parisian school of transition, between Romanticism and Realism. In this first phase he used the technique of heavy brushstrokes tending to monochromatism, even if the vivacity of the subjects representing the oriental markets allowed him not indifferent chromatic ideas. A trip to Italy followed, where he stayed and where he was particularly fascinated by the works of Raphael and Titian. This was his period of maximum creativity, also characterized by works with religious subjects, often biblical. Decamps spent most of his life around Paris, attracted by nature, animals and outdoor activities. He died in 1860, due to the consequences of an accident that occurred during a gallop, in Fontainebleau. See less
