Edouard Manet (1832-1883): Édouard Manet is considered one of the greatest painters in the entire history of art. Although he refused to join the group of Realists and - subsequently - to exhibit together with the Impressionists, he was a fundamental trait d'union between Realism and Impressionism: it was an absolutely unique episode, independent of any movement, but which played a key role in paving the way for contemporary painting.
