This charming cabinet comes from Shanxi in central China, circa 1860 and remains in it's original condition The lacquer has … Read more This charming cabinet comes from Shanxi in central China, circa 1860 and remains in it's original condition The lacquer has considerably worn, especially on the top surface and around the bottom of the doors, the black lacquer has cracked in places leaving a beautiful patina.

It has a solid, thick framed construction that is softened by the delicately carved spandrels at each side, which taper down to the feet from the extended top surface in a familiar 'butterfly' front profile.

The two central doors are fitted with wooden dowels that slot into wooden sockets rather than with brass hardware, adding to the clean, beautifully balanced design. There is a single shelf within the cupboard space and the fronts of the two upper drawers are set in moulded frames, dressed fitted with simple brass ring handles.

This is a delightful cabinet that would nicely compliment a hallway or reception area. See less
