They are beautifuilly crafted from elm wood with some lovely carved decoration on the backrest - in this case there is an auspicious 'ruyi' symbol in open carving on each chair above a Chinese unicorn ('kylin') in relief.

The overall style are based on the traditional 'official's hat' or 'yoke-back'chairs, but in this case the extending top rail that gives the style its name is only slightly curved and unusually, the rail, legs and supporting posts are all squared rather than rounded.

This unusual pair of Chinese armchairs were originally finished in a black lacquer, however this has faded over the years and largely worn on the seat, armrests and footrests to reveal the paler wood below.

A delightful pair of armchairs that would compliment the modern home in a hallway, reception area or living room.
