Traditional shades of brown, red, green, and yellow embellish the paneled doors, creating a richly decorative surface that reflects the craftsmanship and artistic traditions of European country furniture.
An intricately hand-carved curved crown adds an elegant architectural element to the upper portion of the armoire. A name is prominently displayed within the two upper painted panels, while the date 1847 is highlighted in the lower panels. The decorative painted details, together with the personalized inscriptions, give this armoire wonderful historical character.
The substantial cabinet rests on traditional front bun feet, with contrasting black painted trim along the lower edge. Painted decorative panels continue along the right side, while the left side remains without matching painted panels.
The two doors open to reveal a spacious interior that originally contained shelves, which are no longer present. Seven hand-carved wooden hooks remain along the upper left interior, reflecting the armoire's original use for hanging clothing. The open interior provides an opportunity to customize the storage configuration to suit individual needs.
The original key is included but functions as a pull only. The left door is held in place by an interior upper metal sliding latch.
Generations of use are evident throughout the armoire. The interior lower back edge displays significant distress, including holes, worn wood, old stains, and age related separation between planks. Residual evidence of old dried wormhole activity is present but is no longer active. An old repair is visible along the right side, while additional gouges, cracks, and separation can be seen along the exterior, especially the sides. These signs of age contribute to the authentic character of the piece and do not impact its function.
Restored, stable, and ready to use. A wonderful example of original Hungarian folk art furniture, combining richly colored hand-painted decoration, traditional carving, and a beautifully aged surface.
