On offer is a 19th-century Renaissance-style portrait of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine with Prince John in the style of Peter Paul Rubens. The work was painted by William Hilton, R.A. (1786-1839). An artist whose works are held in major collections, Hilton specialized in large-scale narrative works executed in the "Grand Manner"—a style designed to elevate historic, biblical, or literary events into high art.
SCENE: SCENE: The piece depicts Henry II alongside his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine—arguably the “power couple” of the 12th century—along with their youngest son, Prince John (the future King John and the younger brother of the legendary Richard the Lionheart). The composition serves a symbolic and political narrative. The king's hand rests firmly upon a legal charter spread across the desk. This represents the expansion of the Angevin Empire and the codification of English Common Law under his rule. Prince John's youthful inclusion acts as a nod to dynastic succession, ironically contrasting with the historical reality of the brutal family rebellions that eventually destroyed Henry's reign.
CONTEXT: While King Henry II reigned over England from 1154 to 1189, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, British academic artists frequently painted scenes from medieval English history to foster a sense of national identity and romanticize the monarchy. This painting is a classic example of a romanticized "history painting."
ARTIST: William Hilton R.A. (1786–1839), also known as William Hilton the Younger, was a prominent British portrait and history painter. The initials "R.A." stand for Royal Academician, meaning he was elected as a full member of the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London (elected Associate in 1813 and full Academician in 1819). He eventually served as the Keeper of the Royal Academy from 1827 until his death.
RUBENS INFLUENCE: The work is heavily influenced by the style of Peter Paul Rubens, who was a primary source of inspiration for William Hilton. Hilton meticulously studied the Flemish Baroque master, even painting a famous direct copy of Rubens' Samson and Delilah early in his career. While this specific painting leans toward 19th-century academic portraiture, it incorporates key elements of Rubens’ signature style such as the rich colors and textures, as well as the starkly lit faces and deeply shadowed background. And, like Rubens, Hilton used heroic body posture—such as Henry II's commanding hand placement and Eleanor’s elegant tilt of the head—to elevate a historical narrative into an idealized, high-stakes piece of dynastic theater.
PUBLIC COLLECTIONS: The Tate Britain, The National Portrait Gallery, The British Museum, The Wallace Collection, and the Royal Academy of Arts. Given his lifelong career there, the RA permanent collection maintains foundational works such as The Rape of Ganymede (1806) and Cupid and the Nymphs (1830). Additionally, Hilton’s works are displayed at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Manchester Art Gallery, and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Outside the UK, works can be found in institutions like the Yale Center for British Art in the United States.
