Each back rises to a molded crest rail with gently arched shoulders, framing a pierced loop splat between fluted stiles. At the top of each splat is a finely carved Prince of Wales plume, the three ostrich feathers that became one of the most admired ornaments of the Hepplewhite style.
The plume honors George, Prince of Wales, whose taste for elegance shaped English design in the late Georgian era. George Hepplewhite's celebrated Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide made lightness, graceful proportion, and refined neoclassical ornament the standard of fine English seating. Nineteenth century cabinetmakers carried that legacy forward, reviving and reinterpreting Hepplewhite designs in rich mahogany for the finest English dining rooms.
The chairs are as sturdy as they are elegant. They are built with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and rest on square legs joined by H stretchers for lasting strength. The seats are upholstered over the rails in white fabric. A complete set of eight brings a matched, stately presence to a formal dining room.
Condition Note: The vintage white upholstery shows age and may need to be replaced.
