The wooden base is an addition dating from the early 20th century; it is also Spanish and, despite the difference in age, complements the piece well in terms of both color and quality.
Origin: Spain, primarily associated with the Baroque period and inspired by Moorish (Mudejar) art.
Crafted from carved walnut, partially painted and embellished with bone inlays and openwork wrought iron on the sides.
It features a multitude of small drawers and central doors, richly decorated with geometric and architectural motifs.
As the *bargueño* was originally a portable piece of furniture designed for travel, some examples were covered in leather or velvet fabric.
There was a specific Spanish tradition of using the renowned Cordoba leather (*guadamecil*) to sheath the exterior of the piece.
Traces of fabric are visible around the metal fittings; please refer to the photographs. See less
