This pair of goblets carries an enamel portrait medallion of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896), who ruled Persia for nearly fifty years. Bohemian glasshouses made enameled cranberry glass for the Persian market from the late 1800s onward, with his portrait at the center, wrapped in raised gilt scrollwork covering the bowl and foot, on a clear stem. Full-size goblets, not cordials — a pair with real presence, and a piece of the long trade story between Bohemian glassmakers and the Persian court. See less
