This impressive, room filling, and more than seven-foot-high artwork is a masterful piece of late 19th-century European Academic art. Signed and dated 1880 in the lower left corner, this slightly illegible signature may be that of Gustave Henri de Beaumont (1851-1922).
SUBJECT: The painting features a group of seven playful putti, or cherub-like figures, floating dynamically against a brilliant sky. Unlike static, purely decorative Renaissance cherubs, the painter injects a vibrant narrative and movement into the composition. The central floating figure appears to plunge downward, clutching a smoking torch, while a putto at the very top blows into a horn.
SYMBOLISM: This imagery traditionally represents an allegory of the Dawn, or “Daybreak Waking the World,” where the dark smoke of night is dispersed by the light of the morning sun—here represented by the large, glowing disc in the upper right—while a clarion call announces the new day. The interacting pairs—one putto tightly hugging another from behind on the left, and a duo holding a thin string or thread at the bottom—ground the mythological scene in tender, real-world expressions of childhood innocence and camaraderie. Just the thing for the nursery.
STYLE: A rigorous academic training shines through in the soft nuances of the flesh tones, the realistic skin folds, and the complex foreshortening of the tumbling, airborne bodies. While the bodies are firmly rendered, the surrounding sky, billowing clouds and the wisps of dark smoke exhibit the broad, looser Impressionistic brushstrokes that became popular in the late 19th century. The palette is bright and atmospheric, emphasizing soft pastels, sky blues, and radiant cream tones.
STRUCTURE: The back of the canvas shows a highly robust, multi-paneled six-section wooden stretcher bar setup with corner keys. This heavy-duty reinforcement is typical of substantial 19th-century institutional or salon-sized canvases to keep the tension even over many decades.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Bottom left (photo #8). Image dimensions: 80.75 inches high x 49 inches wide.
