Autumn vine leaves curl up into the dusky background, and a slender porcelain vase painted with flowers and an exotic bird glows against the shadows. A bunch of pale green grapes dangles over the edge of the ledge, catching the light. Signed lower right "JB-ISABEY." Presented in a deep, ornate gilt frame with acanthus and scrolling-leaf relief and a twisted-rope liner, a warm and abundant piece for a dining room or kitchen wall!

About the painting: The signature recalls the celebrated French painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767–1855), but Isabey was known for his portrait miniatures, and this decorative still life is a later work painted in the tradition of the great Dutch and Victorian fruit painters, with their marble ledges, tumbling grapes and Chinese-style porcelain. From near Paris, France!
