In case your ancestors missed acquiring art in France or Italy during the Renaissance, this oil painting on canvas is an antique, high-quality historical reproduction that can stand in at home as if they did. The work depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ child on the left and his cousin, infant Saint John the Baptist on the right.
COMPOSITION: The Figure of Mary forms the apex of a harmonious pyramidal structure. She holds a prophetic book on her lap while gently guiding the infant Jesus. A young, nude Christ child stands on Mary's foot, looking lovingly up at her in a display of childlike dependency. To their side, a young Saint John the Baptist kneels dressed in animal skins, grasping his traditional reed cross.
The background features an idyllic, rolling countryside garden atmosphere typical of High Renaissance humanism. To the left, a delicate, single tree stands against distant blue-grey mountains and a calm body of water. To the right, a detailed Renaissance-era city skyline, complete with spires, towers, and fortified walls, stretches beneath a soft, cloud-filled horizon.
ORIGINS: This painting is an old master copy executed after a famous composition by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael. The original work is called “La Belle Jardinière” (also widely known as “Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist”). The original was completed around 1507–1508 and is famously exhibited in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
The 19th century was the golden era of the Grand Tour and the rise of major national academies. European artists were frequently granted official permission to set up easels inside the Louvre to paint high-fidelity replicas of Raphael's masterpieces for wealthy international collectors who wanted a piece of classical European art for their estates.
MATERIALS: While the original masterpiece by Raphael was painted using oil on a poplar wood panel, this antique replica is executed as oil on canvas. The back of the painting shows a coarse hand-woven linen canvas stretched across a heavy, cross-braced wooden stretcher with corner keys. The artwork is housed in a substantial, deep-set, dark stained wooden molding with a thin gilded inner lip. The style of the corner braces, the aged oxidation of the wood, and the mechanical frame suspension hardware on the back indicate that this work was likely reframed (or the current frame was reinforced) in the late 19th century or early 20th century.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Image dimensions: 47 inches high x 31 inches wide.
