This 1981 abstract landscape across two panels, a “diptych”, captures a period of American art transitioning into the Postmodernism and Neo-Expressionism movements of the early 1980s.
FORMAT: The most striking element of this piece is its staggered, interlocking layout. While standard diptychs hang flush side-by-side, this work uses an asymmetric offset format. The dynamic brushwork mimics a structural shift; the horizon and brushstrokes cross the threshold between panels seamlessly, using the physical gap as part of the composition itself to enhance the sense of a jagged "Montana Cliff".
CONTEXT: Breaking away from standard rectangular frames was a major trend in 1981. Painters and multi-media artists frequently experimented with shaped canvases, multi-panel constructions and sculptural integrations to redefine spatial dimensions. Neo-Expressionist and Pattern & Decoration figures commonly broke up a cohesive view across separate panels to create rhythm and tension, similar to the "horizon slash" aesthetic popular during this era.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Initials and year bottom left (photo #12). Title and date inscribed verso (photo #10). Each piece dimensions: 28 inches high x 21 inches wide.
