A rare and delightful vintage novelty wall art piece featuring a fluffy cream kitten playing with yarn, rendered in the unmistakable style of French animalier painter Daniel Merlin (1861–1933). Dating to the late 1920s to 1940s, this whimsical mixed-media piece features a beautifully aged paper lithograph print meticulously applied to a recessed wood backing.
The true highlight is the heavily detailed, three-dimensional wood and gesso arched frame. The top arch is adorned with deeply sculpted, high-relief red roses interwoven with winding teal ribbons, while the lower right corner features an embossed, matching red ball of yarn with unwinding threads running along the bottom edge. The entire frame features a warm, antiqued gold and bronze patina that perfectly highlights its age and historic character.
A wonderful, highly collectible find perfect for a gallery wall, kitchen display, or whimsical folk art collection.
