The frame is carved with moldings that create an elegant, paneled effect, and the original mirror plate is surrounded by a beaded border. The gilding has become beautifully worn over the years, and in parts of the sides and top of the frame, we can see the exposed red bole over which the gold leaf was applied to create a warm glow. Perhaps the most striking part of this mirror is along the bottom of the frame where we find breathtaking sparkles in the glass–results of the mercury mirror backing’s oxidation with time–which add another layer of beauty to this incredible piece. With its large scale and finely aged appearance, this mantel mirror would make an impressive addition to any space. Gently cleaned and ready for use in your home. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering the age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
