This original watercolor and gouache artwork depicts a sacred meeting of the Native American Church (NAC), commonly known as a Peyote Ceremony, painted by the prominent Diné (Navajo) artist Beatien Yazz (1928–2012).
SCENE: The painting illustrates an all-night meeting inside a tipi. Gathered around a central fire pit shaped like a crescent moon—often built out of soil or sand to symbolize the path of life—the members sit on blankets along the perimeter. The Roadman (leader), the Chief Drummer and the Cedarman are seen conducting the rite. Participants hold traditional feather fans, rattles and staffs. The water bird symbol or a staff can often be seen resting near the altar, and a crescent-shaped ash mound is carefully tended.
LOCALE: While the Native American Church incorporates multi-tribal practices and originally spread from Oklahoma tribes (like the Comanche and Kiowa), Beatien Yazz was a Diné artist. He often documented the practices of the Navajo Nation reservation in northeastern Arizona, where NAC meetings inside tipis became highly prominent mid-century.
CEREMONY: These all-night prayer services are held for healing, Thanksgiving, guidance, or spiritual protection. The sacred medicine, peyote, is taken as a sacrament to facilitate a direct personal connection to the Creator or Great Spirit.
ARTIST: Also known as Jimmy Toddy or Little No Shirt, Beatien Yazz was a legendary self-taught Navajo painter. He gained early fame as a child prodigy under the encouragement of Bill and Sallie Lippincott, traders at the Wide Ruins Trading Post. During World War II, Yazz served honorably as a U.S. Marine Corps Navajo Code Talker. After the war, he studied briefly under notable artists but primarily returned to paint vivid, highly sought-after depictions of Diné ceremonial and daily life.
Yazz was an open member of the Native American Church. In the late 1950s through the 1970s, he produced a highly collectible series of works reflecting his spiritual visions and church meetings. Because a medicine man warned him his eventual blindness was a spiritual punishment for painting sacred figures, he ultimately stopped painting by 1991.
ERA: While this piece was likely painted between the late 1950s and the 1970s—during the prime of Yazz's "Peyote Period"—the presence of the copyright symbol next to his signature (B. Yazz ©) typically indicates a production date from the mid-1960s onward.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Lower right (photo #5). Image dimensions: 19.5 inches high x 28.5 inches wide.
