On offer is a mid-20th-century watercolor that captures a classic mid-century street scene with vibrant, expressive character.
SCENE: Although the painting is untitled, the architecture depicted strongly indicates the New Orleans French Quarter (Vieux Carré). The distinct wrought-iron balcony railings on the right and left, multi-story Creole-style townhouses with window shutters, street-level canvas awnings, and narrow sidewalks are all iconic traits of historic streets like Royal, Chartres, or Bourbon Street.
STYLE: The painting is executed in a loose mid-century expressionist/impressionist watercolor style. It features rapid, gestural brushwork, wet-on-wet sky techniques, and bold ink or dark watercolor outlines to define structures. This approach was highly favored by plein-air artists who sold their work directly on the streets of the French Quarter. While unsigned, it is painted in the exact manner of popular mid-century New Orleans watercolorists. It bears a strong stylistic resemblance to the work of Nestor Hippoyle Frugé, as well as contemporaries like Tom Lane and William Collins, who frequently painted the Quarter using this exact atmospheric, ink-and-wash aesthetic.
PERIOD: Supported by the vintage automobiles lined up along the curb, particularly the dark car in the foreground which mimics the silhouette of a classic mid-century Volkswagen Beetle, this piece appears to be a mid-20th-century artwork. The backing and frame indicate that the piece was re-framed at a later date, likely in the past 30 years. The back reveals clean white backing material secured with modern automated metal glazing clips and vinyl-coated hanging wire. The antiqued gold-leaf frame is a contemporary reproduction style common in modern frame shops rather than a period-accurate frame from the 1960s.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Image dimensions: 20 inches high x 26 inches wide.
