Hand-modelled with grotesque expressions and whimsical bodily forms, each piece presents a distinct personality, varying from wide-mouthed humanoid figures to an avian creature with an elongated downward-curving beak. The figures are crafted from a dense terracotta-toned clay body, finished with an earthy salt glaze that creates a tactile, subtly mottled semi-matte sheen across the surface. Toasted dark brown shading naturally collects in the recesses, highlighting the applied pellets of clay, combed hair textures, and rhythmic impressed notches along the flared bases. Several of the pieces incorporate hollow chambers with cut-out eyes, nostrils, and gaping mouths, producing striking shadow and depth. The ensemble comprises two tall baluster-bodied figures topped with swollen bulbous heads, an eccentric character sporting a cocked cap and vertical slotted mouth, and a tapering bird figure with a perforated crest. Each combines wheel-thrown central forms with hand-applied relief details, including arms clutched tightly across their torsos and circular ringed eyes. Produced by the Arta Harghitei cooperative workshop in the Harghita region of Romania, these pieces were made circa 1970. They reflect the mid-century revival and reinvention of Transylvanian folk ceramic traditions, blending regional pottery techniques with a modernist, slightly surreal sculptural approach reminiscent of historic grotesque ware. The tallest figure in the group measures approximately 24 cm in height. All four stand securely on integrated circular foot rims. See less
