The deep, warm colour of the timber brings out the natural flame grain patterns across the rectangular top, which has developed an attractive patination over time. Mitered crossbanded borders highlight the dense figuring of the mahogany, providing a balanced frame for the central panel. Beneath the oversailing top, a single full-width frieze drawer sits flush within the apron, neatly outlined by fine cockbeading to protect the drawer edges. It features an ornate pierced brass backplate handle with an integral swing pull, along with an operational lock accompanied by its key. The drawer construction demonstrates traditional craftsmanship, showing slender hand-cut dovetail joints securing solid oak drawer sides and sound base linings. The underframe is designed with shaped corner brackets and a softly contoured apron that flows cleanly into four elegant cabriole legs. Each leg features a rounded knee and a graceful taper, terminating in classic pad feet that rest firmly on the floor. The legs provide an airy, open stance while maintaining excellent structural stability, preventing the table from appearing bulky in smaller rooms. Originally intended as a silver table or tea table in an early country house interior, a low-profile piece of this scale serves versatile roles in a modern home. It functions exceptionally well as an occasional hall console, a compact writing table, or an understated side table beside a sofa. Produced during the late Georgian period, probably between 1820 and 1830, it embodies the enduring appeal of earlier Georgian and Queen Anne forms. Factual dimensions measure 91.5 cm (36 inches) wide, 57 cm (22.5 inches) deep, and 71 cm (28 inches) high, offering generous surface area while maintaining compact overall proportions. See less
