A spectacular large-scale studio pottery vase by acclaimed American ceramic artist Michael Kifer, celebrated for his expressive combinations of sculptural form, dramatic color, and contrasting surface textures.

Standing an impressive 16 inches tall, this substantial handcrafted vessel blurs the boundaries between functional pottery and contemporary ceramic sculpture.

Its tall, angular body features a rich, glossy aubergine and burgundy ground, dramatically embellished with sweeping abstract brushstrokes in turquoise, teal, lavender, blue, and soft yellow-green. Delicate golden ochre lines, spontaneous markings, and painterly gestures create an energetic composition that wraps continuously around the vessel.

About the Artist

Michael Kifer (born 1952) is an accomplished American ceramic artist based in Richland, Michigan, whose studio practice began in 1974. Michael Kifer maintained an accomplished studio ceramics career spanning more than five decades, from 1974 until his retirement in 2025.

After studying at Kellogg Community College, Kifer apprenticed with noted ceramic sculptor Frank A. Colson in Sarasota, Florida. His artistic direction evolved significantly following his studies at the Penland School of Craft in 1984, where he explored a more painterly approach to ceramic decoration.

His distinctive work combines expressive surface painting with contrasting textures, unconventional forms, and an adventurous use of color. Throughout his career, Kifer has received recognition and awards for his innovative approach to studio ceramics.
