An exceptional 1960s Mexican Modernist "Bird of Paradise" water pitcher designed by Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo, handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico.
This striking sculptural pitcher combines traditional Mexican metalworking with imaginative mid-century design, featuring a silver-plated brass body and an elaborate bird-shaped handle adorned with vibrant green malachite inlay and warm brass accents.
The pitcher features an elegant, flared pouring spout, a gently tapered neck, and a beautifully rounded, lobed base. Its polished silver-plated surface contrasts dramatically with the richly colored bird perched along the rim.
The stylized Bird of Paradise features an elongated silver-toned neck, a delicate brass beak, and an expressive, swept-back brass crest. Its body and sweeping tail incorporate intricately arranged green stone inlay, introducing natural color and texture to the otherwise polished metallic composition.
The bird's gracefully curved tail forms part of the handle, transforming a functional serving vessel into an extraordinary work of decorative sculpture.
The combination of organic forms, contrasting metals, and colorful stone inlay reflects the innovative craftsmanship associated with Los Castillo, one of the most celebrated workshops of 20th-century Mexican silver and metalwork.
Mexican Modernism & Taxco Design
Founded by members of the Castillo family, the Los Castillo workshop became internationally recognized for its inventive jewelry, silverware, hollowware, and decorative objects incorporating mixed metals, semiprecious stones, and traditional Mexican artistic influences.
Antonio Castillo's work represents an important chapter in the development of Mexican Modernist decorative arts.
This pitcher will appeal to collectors of William Spratling, Antonio Pineda, Héctor Aguilar, Margot de Taxco, Salvador Terán, and Frederick Davis, designers whose work helped establish the international reputation of Mexican silver and decorative arts during the mid-20th century.
Although each designer maintained a distinctive aesthetic, their work shares an appreciation for sculptural forms, meticulous craftsmanship, and the artistic traditions of Mexico.
Equally compelling as a functional water pitcher, decorative vessel, or standalone sculptural object, this extraordinary piece would make a striking addition to a curated dining table, bar cabinet, sideboard, or collection of important Mexican Modernist design.
