Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York in 1858.

This view shows some of the fortifications that protected Brooklyn Heights in 1776, along with the enlargements and additions made by the British when they took control of Long Island. Two forts, Fort Greene and Fort Putnam, protected the neck leading to the heights, which spanned only about a mile, and was surrounded on the north by Wallabout Bay, and on the south by the expansive Gowanus Creek.

Major American Forts shown:

- Fort Stirling: Located at the northernmost point on the Brooklyn Heights bluffs, overlooking the East River to prevent British ships from commanding the channel.
- Fort Putnam: Situated on a high hill (the modern-day site of Fort Greene Park) to anchor the left flank of the inner American defensive line.
- Fort Greene: Positioned just southwest of Fort Putnam to reinforce the center-left section of the trenches.
- Redoubt at Cobble Hill: Also colloquially known as "The Corkscrew Fort" or "Smith's Barbette," this was a heavily fortified high conical hill providing a wide panoramic view over Gowanus and the entire defensive line.
- Fort Box: Located on the far right flank near the mill ponds of Gowanus Creek, guarding the old Gowanus Road.
