She wears a blue robe scattered with white blossoms and birds, with embroidered cuffs of green, yellow and red. The boy sits against her in a green silk jacket with red sleeves, his hair tied in two small buns, and holds the page with a steady hand. This double portrait is painted in reverse on glass in the manner of the Canton export studios of southern China, set against a deep navy ground that was laid in last and shows its brushwork. A black shape at the lower right marks the edge of a chair or table.

Measuring 16 inches tall in a dark wood frame carved with a key-fret border and fitted with a brass hanger, it hangs in a bedroom, a nursery, a study or a hallway, or stands on a shelf or console. The tender subject and the blue ground suit a quiet corner where it can be seen up close.
