This exceptional mid-century hand-painted wooden bookcase captures the whimsical romance of the American folk art revival, popularized by Peter Hunt on Cape Cod during the 1940s and 1950s.
Purchased from a dedicated New England collector who frequented the famous Brimfield Antique Flea Market, this piece is unsigned but a textbook example of Hunt's celebrated "Transformagic" movement—elevating utilitarian furniture into vibrant works of functional art.
The bookcase features a rich, distressed red frame contrasted against a warm, honey-yellow interior. The upper valance is hand-lettered with the classic French proverb, "Aide-toi, le ciel t'aidera" ("Help yourself, and heaven will help you"), set against a beautiful scalloped blue-and-white trim. Both the sides and interior panels are adorned with striking, symmetrical peasant-style motifs consisting of vibrant red hearts, double-stroke leaves, and stylized tulip-pomegranates applied with confident, heavy brushstrokes. An authentic amber-brown overglaze provides an immediate, warm antique patina.
Structurally, the piece is robust and sturdy. It features three spacious shelves—the top two rest on period-correct metal support pins, while the bottom shelf is structurally fixed to ensure stability.
