This exquisite example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving captures the refined elegance characteristic of the Peking style. The design utilizes a restrained color palette, allowing the artistry of the central medallion and border to dominate the composition. The field is rendered in a luminous, soft beige, typical of fine ivory beige cream rugs from this period.

The expansive, open field is minimally adorned with scattered floral sprigs, drawing the eye toward the striking central medallion. This circular motif, executed entirely in deep indigo and lighter blue tones, features traditional Chinese mythological creatures and stylized blossoms, providing a sharp contrast against the pale ground.

A magnificent, wide border frames the composition, featuring continuous scrolling vines and stylized flowers in varying shades of cobalt and sky blue. The deliberate use of negative space and the dramatic contrast between the saturated blue and the neutral field elevate the visual impact of this antique rug beyond mere decoration.

Woven during a period of significant cultural exchange, this piece reflects both traditional Chinese iconography and Western aesthetic demands for large-scale, sophisticated floor coverings. Its generous dimensions make it an ideal room size rug for contemporary interiors seeking historical gravitas and understated luxury. See less
